What is WordPress?

November 19, 2014 By Jeff

WordPressWordPress, originally created by its designers as a blogging software program, has become one of the most popular content management systems. A blog is a term utilized for an internet journal, daily record, or serial posted by an individual or a team. A content management system is used to establish an entire website, which may or may not include a blog.

In the beginning, blogs were typically used to convey personal viewpoints and interests of the owner. Around 2011, WordPress began acquiring a larger share of the website development market and has been used to power corporate (from small companies to large entities), political, government and personal websites. Quite simply, everyone that wishes to, may now share their point of view.

Posts are the primary component of a blog and still in most instances, are the lifeline of a blog. Posts may consist of writings, images and videos. Pages are the mechanism used to create a customary website.

WordPress is a superb blogging and CMS system emphasizing visual appeal, web requirements, and usability. An open source system, it is free to use and hundreds of people work on the code. WordPress provides an easy to use dashboard to publish blog posts or website content. There are numerous frameworks, themes and plugins which are used to enhance the initial installation of WordPress. With the use of the frameworks or custom programming, it is also possible construct your very own style or tailor an already existing one to your needs. WordPress works best on a Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP platform (LAMP) but will also work on a Windows Server configured to run PHP and MySQL. WordPress provides an excellent method for insertion of media straight into pages and posts. Additionally, it is easy to embed external media, such as YouTube or Vimeo videos.

Since WordPress is flexible, functional and versatile, it provides an exceptional platform on which to build your website and blog.
